Exploring Edmonton: Theatres and cinemas
Three perfect domes of escapism within the city.

Edmonton is a fast expanding city with an ever evolving-culture. It is filled with cafes, theatres, parks, galleries, and more. After the must-visit eating spots and the niche museums and galleries, here is a list of some unique theatrical experiences our city offers. Ready to dive into the world of storytelling? Jump in!
Walterdale Theatre
Walterdale Theatre is located next to the Old Strathcona’s Farmers Market, in the Strathcona No. 1 Fire Hall. Walterdale is a community theatre group founded in 1958, making it one of Western Canada’s oldest amateur theatre groups. They operate entirely with volunteers, except for their part-time administrators. This makes their performances and programs quite affordable to watch and getting to participate in theatre more accessible. Last week, they ran a new play reading program, From Cradle to Stage. In general, they run auditions for new plays and volunteers all year long. Their aim is to produce engaging and vibrant productions, and take my word for it, they will give you exactly that!
Shadow Theatre
Born out of the Edmonton International Fringe Festival, Shadow Theatre is an Edmonton-based theatre company founded in 1990 and incorporated in 1992. Since 1995, it produces regular mainstage seasons which feature modern classics, innovative contemporary plays, and new Canadian works. Their vision is to produce thoughtful entertainment, and thus all their works focus on exploring the complexities of the human experience!
Capitol Theatre
Capitol Theatre, located in Fort Edmonton Park, serves as a recreation of the original 1929 Capitol Theatre. It hosts a variety of entertainment, including classic films, live theatre performances, and 4D immersive experiences. During the summer, Northern Lights – Edmonton’s Journey is a must visit experience! Additionally, even if you are not a theatre enthusiast, with elaborate architecture, red velvet seats, and incandescent lighting, just visiting this place is worth it!
