In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: Comics, Zines, and Book Market
When: April 12 – 13
Where: Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA)
Admission: Free

The AGA is hosting its fourth-annual Comics, Zines, and Book Market. This market will include products ranging from comics, zines, printmaking, bookbinding, calligraphy, and more. Some of the featured vendors include InkFable Media, Dragonfly Book Press, robotsweater, and more. This is a great way to check out some amazing products and support local!

What: Drag Queen Bingo
When: April 15 at 7:30 p.m..
Where: Spotlight Cabaret
Admission: $10

Every Tuesday the Spotlight Cabaret on Whyte Avenue hosts a Drag Queen Bingo night. Hosted by drag queens Pep Per and Pheromone Killz, participants can enjoy both a glamorous drag performance and an exciting game of bingo! There’s also the chance to win some prizes, so don’t miss out.

What: Gateway to Cinema: We Live in Time
When: April 17 at 6:45 p.m..
Where: Metro Cinema
Admission: Free for students with valid student I.D.

Gateway to Cinema is The Gateway’s partnership with Metro Cinema that provides free movies to students. This film showing for April is We Live in Time (2024), a romantic drama directed by John Crowley. Starring Florence Pugh (Almut) and Andrew Garfield (Tobias), We Live in Time follows their relationship through a non-linear narrative.

What: Last Class Bash
When: April 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..
Where: Students’ Union Building (SUB)
Admission: Free

Today is the last day of classes! What better way to spend it than with an end-of-semester celebration? The University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) is hosting a number of events from a pancake breakfast, to build-your-own sundae, and even roller skating. While most of us aren’t quite done yet, with final exams quickly approaching, this is a great way to have some fun on the last day of the semester.

What: Portfolio Show
When: April 4 – 12
Where: Fine Arts Building (FAB) 1-63 | Bleviss Laboratory Theatre
Admission: Free

The Portfolio Show is an annual tradition hosted by the department of drama at the U of A. It is intended to showcase the work of U of A design and production students. The showcase is open to both bachelor of fine arts (BFA) and master’s of fine arts (MFA) students and is meant to “highlight the many and diverse talents and processes which go into making a theatre production.”

Brooklyn is the 2024-25 Arts & Culture Editor at The Gateway. She previously served as the 2023-24 Deputy Opinion Editor. She is a Classics major and Creative Writing minor. She is a lover of fantasy books, peach iced tea, and can usually be found obsessing over pictures of her dog Zoey.
