In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!
What: [BLANK]
When: February 7 – 15
Where: Timms Centre for the Arts
Admission: $14 for students
[BLANK], from the Studio Theatre, is the University of Alberta’s newest production, featuring performers and participants. Directed by Alice Birch, [BLANK] tells the story of women and families in the criminal justice system. Through the use of various scenes, the performance sheds light on those who are in the system, and how people can help.
What: Gateway to Cinema: Lisa Frankenstein
When: February 13 at 7:00 p.m..
Where: Metro Cinema
Admission: Free for students with valid student I.D.
Gateway to Cinema is The Gateway’s partnership with Metro Cinema that provides free movies to students. This month’s feature film, Lisa Frankenstein, follows Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton) who deals with the highs and lows of high school. One day she visits a cemetery where a nineteenth century pianist (Cole Sprouse) comes back to life. Together, the pair embark on a murderous adventure.
What: Off-The-Cuff Cabaret
When: February 13 – 14 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m..
Where: Second Playing Space at the Timms Centre for the Arts
Admission: $11.30
Off-The-Cuff Cabaret is a student-hosted event intended for students to showcase both performative and visual arts. This year’s cabaret theme is 8-volution which is a nod to creativity and the ever-evolving nature of food, art, tastes, and ideas. Featured performances will range from poetry, to singing, to dancing, comedy, and more. Unwind before reading week by enjoying these student-led performances!
What: Origin screening
When: February 15 from 1:45 to 5:30 p.m..
Where: Stanley A. Milner Library
Admission: Free (reservation required)
There are numerous events going on in Edmonton for Black History Month, including the screening of Origin (2023). Hosted by the Congress of Black Women Canada, Origin is a biographical drama about the life of author Isabel Wilkerson as she writes the novel Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent. After the film there will be a post-show talk.
What: Sweet Treats & Latte Festival
When: February 7 – 17
Where: Various locations
Admission: Free
With the harsh weather Edmonton’s been having, there’s no better way to spend it than indoors with a warm drink. The Sweet Treats & Latte Festival is a way to support local businesses in the Old Strathcona and Whyte Avenue area. Participating businesses will have a feature drink and treat, along with a coffee card to fill out with the chance to win a number of prizes! Some of the participating businesses include The Woodrack Cafe featuring their toffee-cinnamon americano, Ávila Arepa‘s tres leches cake, and so many more!
