In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: Bear Grease
When: October 17 – 27
Where: Citadel Theatre
Admission: $40 – $65

Everyone knows the classic 1978 musical Grease — with iconic performances from John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. However, Bear Grease takes the original musical, and puts an Indigenous spin on it. While the cast of characters is mostly the same, there are some notable changes. There is Rezzo instead of Rizzo, Canuckie rather than Kenickie, and more. Bear Grease premiered at the 2021 Edmonton International Fringe Festival (EIFF), and is now showing at the Citadel Theatre.

What: Edmonton Design Week
When: October 15 – 20
Where: Locations vary
Admission: $5 – $50

Edmonton has many public art displays and galleries throughout the city. There are even dedicated streets, like 124th Street that are famous for their artistic displays. Edmonton Design Week is a way to celebrate this diverse art and design scene in the city. There are various events during the week, where you can buy a ticket to tour a specific venue. Some of the tours include walking through the Citadel Theatre, learning about S2 Architecture, and more.

What: Gateway to Cinema: Longlegs
When: October 10 at 7:00 p.m..
Where: Metro Cinema
Admission: Free for students with valid I.D.

Gateway to Cinema is The Gateway’s partnership with Metro Cinema that provides free movies to students. This psychological horror-thriller follows FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) as she investigates a series of murders tied to a mysterious serial killer known as “Longlegs” (Nicolas Cage). Yet, when Harker discovers a personal connection to the killer, she must fight to stop him.

What: The Temporalists concert
When: October 12 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m..
Where: Yardbird Suite
Admission: $24

The Temporalists are an Edmonton-based jazz trio who are performing at the Yardbird Suite. They are comprised of Stefan Kijek on piano, Biboye Onanuga on drums, and Murray Wood on bass. The music blends storytelling with folk and classical undertones, while also embracing jazz improvisation. Jazz-lovers and amateurs alike should come witness The Temporalists.

What: Trivia Night: Anime
When: October 15 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m..
Where: Dewey’s
Admission: Free

The University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU), has a number of events free to students throughout the year. Along with movie and karaoke nights, the UASU also puts on trivia nights for students to put their eclectic knowledge to the ultimate test. This Tuesday, put your anime knowledge to the test at Dewey’s.
