Marble Pedestal: Halloween

I scream, you scream, we all scream for Halloween!

October has arrived and the Halloween season is in full swing! While many claim Christmas is the best holiday, I firmly disagree. Halloween has plenty of perks that too many people ignore. Although All Hallows Eve is fast approaching, there’s still lots of reasons to get into the spooky spirit!

Halloween has something for everyone. One of my favourite aspects of the season is the opportunity to dress up. I plan my costume months in advance, always writing down ideas for next year, keeping an eye out at the thrift store for a good find. There is nothing more fun than dressing up as your favourite character, or inventing a creative costume. Plus, the satisfaction of the whole outfit coming together is always worth it.

Even if you don’t enjoy dressing up, you can still partake by breaking out some spine-tingling decorations. What’s better than an excuse to drape your house in cobwebs, witches, and pumpkins? Halloween is the one time of year your house can look a mess and you’re praised for it. And when else can you carve a face into a gourd vegetable and put it on display? Carving jack-o’lanterns is a great craft, and as a bonus, you can save the pumpkin seeds and toast them in the oven for a delicious post-carving snack!

Horror movies are another staple of the Halloween season. Indulging in an adrenaline pumping gore-fest with a giant bowl of candy on your lap is a great way to have a blast without having to leave the house. Some of my personal favourite horror movies include Carrie and The Shining. And for those of you not so interested in fear and dread, you can always turn to the camp classics, such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands

If anything, what I love most about Halloween is trick-or-treating. Donning my costume, I love to trek out into the night and collect as much chocolate as I possibly can. Not only is trick-or-treating a great way to get free candy, it’s also a chance to connect with your community. Whether you’re handing out treats, taking your little cousins out, or just going on your own, trick-or-treating is a great way to reinforce your neighbourly relationships. How many times in the year do you get to say hello to all of your neighbours? And for the record — no, university students aren’t too old to go trick-or-treating.

All in all, I love Halloween because, in its own special way, it brings people together. Whether you’re designing a group costume, getting together for a scary movie, or handing candy out to your neighbours, Halloween is a time for both community and some scary good fun!
