With the scorching weather approaching, here are some fun things to do in Edmonton that are both indoors and outdoors!

In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: Civil Blood: A Treaty Story
When: July 24 – August 4
Where: Fort Edmonton Park
Admission: Pay-What-You-Will

Civil Blood: A Treaty Story was first developed at the Banff Centre for the Arts in 2016 at the Truth and Reconciliation through Theatre workshop. It is being produced by the Thou Art Here Theatre in Edmonton! Attendees can choose to follow one of two stories that take place at the Amiskwaciwâskahikan fort (ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ ) in 1876. With this performance, follow either Ekah, a nehiyaw huntress, or Lily, a European idealist, in this story influenced by the signing of Treaty Six.

What: The Magpie Collection: A Dance Festival
When: July 15 – 28
Where: Mile Zero Dance
Admission: $25 per show, $15 per class, free for artist talk

Watch a variety of performances from local and international artists, such as Minggao Zhang from Singapore, Aly Keita from Montreal, and more. The festival features a number of dances that aim to inspire people, and highlight the language of dance. With dance styles ranging from Flamenco to Contemporary Jazz, there is an array of performances!

There is an option to purchase a festival pass for $80 that is an all-access pass to shows, classes, and workshops. Otherwise you can purchase a ticket for individual shows. They run on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m.

What: Rachel Gleddie album release
When: July 17 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Aviary
Admission: $15 advance, $20 at the door

Canadian singer/songwriter Rachel Gleddie released her LP Hibernate on June 28. She draws on multiple genres from folk-pop to alt-country, that feature reflective lyrics. In 2022, Gleddie’s music video for her song “Catacomb” won Best Music Video at the Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA). Her full-length album is out now!

What: re:invention
When: July 2 – August 10
Where: Gallery@501
Admission: Free

Gallery@501’s newest art exhibition features the artwork of Edmonton-based artists Erika Germain and Thomas Weir, along with artist Gerry Ruecker from Regina. All three artists combine their styles in order to challenge traditional ideas about art, and expand our understanding about it. Germain, Weir, and Ruecker use their styles to create a visual language to connect with the viewer.

The reception of re:invention takes place on July 18 at 6:30 p.m. Both the reception and the gallery are free to attend.

What: Write Night
When: July 25, 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Where: Roam Cafe
Admission: Free (registration required)

Do you have writer’s block and need a community of other writers to get your ideas flowing? Or do you have a project in progress and want a space to write? Write Night is an opportunity to be surrounded by other writers, no matter what stage of writing you’re at. This event is facilitated, with introductions, and an hour of writing time.
