2023 Students’ Council and General Faculties Council elections results

12 councillors will start their term on Students' Council in May, with seven seats remaining vacant.

With a voter turnout of 5.3 per cent, the 2023 Students’ Council and General Faculties Council (GFC) elections had the lowest turnout in 15 years.

Last year’s elections had a marginally higher turnout of 5.9 per cent. With 1,788 votes cast this year, the percentage of students that voted was the lowest since 2008, which had a turnout of 3.4 per cent.

The results were announced on March 30, via an email sent out by Students’ Union Chief Returning Officer Matin Koohkan.

Students’ Council Results

For 2023-24, there are 19 seats on Students’ Council — the ultimate authority of the University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU). For Students’ Council, 12 councillors have been elected to serve for 2023-24, leaving seven seats vacant.

Elected councillors represent their faculty in committees and bi-weekly Students’ Council meetings, and are expected to advocate for students and consult with their constituents.

General Faculties Council results

GFC is the highest academic governing body at the U of A, and is responsible for decisions that relate to academic and student affairs. It is composed of 162 members, including faculty deans, professors, students, librarians, academic staff, non-academic staff, and all U of A vice-presidents. Elected representatives represent their faculties in a monthly meeting, and in subcommittees.
