Statement regarding The Gateway’s operations under COVID-19

Amid the ever-changing situation around COVID-19 at the University of Alberta, The Gateway wishes to update our readers on our operations for the time being.

Since Friday, March 13, Gateway staff have shifted to working remotely, meaning that we will not be present in our offices for the rest of the academic year. We will continue to post regularly to our website, gtwy.ca, until the end of the academic year. We will also continue to post regular updates and stories about COVID-19 to our site during this critical period so that undergraduate students and community members can keep getting the information they need in a timely manner. You can find all of our COVID-19 coverage tagged as “COVID-19” under our News section.

In the interest of keeping the campus community informed, we have also created a tipline ([email protected]) for campus community members to reach out about COVID-19 and how it has impacted them or others on campus. While The Gateway will need to be made aware of your identity, any statement made to this line will stay fully anonymous to the public.

In regards to the April edition of our monthly magazine, print editions will be available when it is safe to circulate them on campus. We will be highly encouraging our readers to access our digital version of the magazine, hosted on Issuu, when it comes out. We will also be posting content from the April magazine to our website earlier in the month so that our readers still have access to the fantastic work done by our volunteer and staff writers, photographers, and illustrators.

Alongside remote work measures being undertaken by staff, all volunteer meetings for the year have shifted online as well, in order to facilitate social distancing and allow volunteers the chance to still contribute to The Gateway’s online edition in whatever capacity they feel they can.

All future Gateway outreach events, including Gateway to Cinema and the Reader Appreciation Party, are cancelled indefinitely, in light of ever-increasing social distancing measures. While we are deeply saddened that we cannot host these events this year, we also understand and respect the necessity to cancel these events in order to ensure the health and safety of our readers and the wider community.

In regards to hiring for next year’s staff, we are shifting our interview processes to be conductible completely online via Skype or similar video call platforms. We will continue to put job postings up on our website, and we encourage interested and passionate students to apply for these positions.

While we will not be in our offices, all Gateway operations will continue and all staff are still available via email. We thank our readers for their understanding during this time, and encourage them to stay safe.
