The GatewayThis year, The Gateway is running a referendum asking if students support increasing its fee from $3.54-$5.50 per semester (Fall/Winter), as well as changing the fee from mandatory to opt-out.
Due to a conflict of interest, The Gateway will not be covering our own referendum campaign. We do not feel it is appropriate for a news organization to have a monopoly on the coverage of our campaign, especially when said news organization must retain objectivity and neutrality in its reporting.
In order to ensure that there is no other potential for conflict of interest, as well as to be in accordance with Students’ Union bylaw, the individuals working on The Gateway’s referendum campaign are not current Gateway staff members.
The Gateway will still be covering all other campaigns closely and critically in order to ensure that students are well-informed and have a reliable and accurate source of information to look to before casting their votes.
