Winter is cold. Fire is warm. Need I say more?
Listen, there are a lot of things to hate about the buildings on campus. But sometimes, every once in a while, the university gets something just right.
When the temperature outside was edging below -40 earlier this month, and I was freezing to death during that short walk between the Tory Breezeway and the first floor of the Earth Sciences Building, the fireplace in SUB was just truly magnificent. It’s rarely ever on, but when it is, the best thing you can do is just sit down, close your eyes, and enjoy being even close to warm for just a few minutes.
Yes, that’s what I said. Close your eyes and take a goddamn nap by the fire. You deserve it. If anyone judges you for it, that’s just because they’re too weak to admit they wish they were in your place. Their jealousy may be hot, but that sweet, sweet fireplace is hotter.
The tragedy that shakes us all down to the very cores of our being is that it’s almost never on; and it should be, at least during the winter months. But until this changes, that just means it’s all the more important that you enjoy it while you can. Go, find peace: sit by the fire that warms my body just as much as it warms my heart.
