How did you get into curling?
I used to be a dancer, so I was about 11 or 12, and then in grade seven I had a friend who brought me to “Bring a Buddy Day” for curling in my town, and I decided to go. I wasn’t very fond of it, but I went and ended up really liking it and quitting dance.
How has competing with the Pandas been?
It’s awesome. I’ve have a lot of friends from curling on it, and it’s some of the best coaching in all of Canada.
What’s the best advice your coaches have ever given you?
There’s tons. Some of the best advice they’ve given us is just one rock at a time and try not to look at the outcome all the time. Curling’s a process sport, it’s a long game, so try not to get frustrated at every little thing.
Do you have any memorable curling trips?
My favourite place to compete in was Estonia. It sounds awful but I didn’t ever think of going to the country or really even knew where it was until we ended up winning the Canadian Championship and having to go. But when we got there, it was really cool and historic. People there are pretty nice and welcoming.
What’s something you’ve learned over your four seasons on the Pandas?
I’ve learned to work with different teammates. Every year there’s a bit of a change to the team. I’ve gotten to know a lot of different people and really broadened my horizons.
What kinds of things come from being a curler with the last name Rocque?
It’s funny, news reporters always seem to make a pun out of it. It’s always thrown in there. Lots of people ask me if I started curling because of my last name, or I’ll just see cheesy headlines like “Rocque on a roll.” It’s funny to look every time and see the funny puns they come up with.
Do you watch curling as well?
I love watching it on TV when I’m doing homework and stuff. I’ll actually put on reruns of games and just watch them. It’s nice to watch the elite teams and learn from them.
Any favourite teams or players?
It’s weird because I just aged out of Juniors and I play on the women’s circuit against some of these teams now. Teams I would look up to would definitely be Jennifer Jones, she won the 2014 Olympics and their whole team is just so talented.
What are you looking forward to in the future of your curling career?
It’s my first year on the World Curling Tour, and I’ve been to some pretty cool events. I’ve got to play on TV a few times so that’s exciting. And so I’m just looking forward to a the rest of the year and the rest of hopefully a long career.
