2024 Students’ Council and General Faculties Council elections results
In May, 10 councillors will begin their terms on Students' Council, with nine vacant seats, an increase of two from last year.
In the 2024 Students’ Council and General Faculties Council (GFC) elections, approximately 2,070 students voted, resulting in a voter turnout of 5.96 per cent. This is slightly higher than the 2023 elections, which had a voter turnout of 5.3 per cent.
The unofficial results were announced on March 21 on the Students’ Union’s (SU) Instagram account. The official results will be posted on the SU’s website at a later date, the caption read.
Students’ Council Results
Students’ Council is the ultimate authority of the SU, with 19 seats for faculty representatives. For 2024-25, 10 councillors have been elected, leaving nine vacancies. This is lower than last year’s election, which saw 12 councillors elected and seven vacancies.
Elected councillors represent their faculty in committees and bi-weekly Students’ Council meetings, and are expected to advocate for students and consult with their constituents.

General Faculties Council results
GFC is the highest academic governing body at the U of A, and is responsible for decisions that relate to academic and student affairs. Composed of 158 members, GFC includes faculty deans, professors, students, librarians, academic staff, non-academic staff, and all U of A vice-presidents. Elected representatives represent their faculties in a monthly meeting, and in subcommittees.
There are 39 seats on GFC for appointed undergraduate students. With 15 elected representatives, there are 24 vacant seats and seven unrepresented faculties.
