FAQ

The following are frequently asked questions about volunteering at The Gateway.

  • I don’t have any experience in journalism, can I still get involved?
    • Absolutely! Our staff is here to support you every step of the way, so The Gateway is a great place to get started. You don’t need any previous experience or skills to volunteer here, and we’d be happy to have you no matter where you’re starting from.
  • What does the time commitment look like?
    • Volunteering at The Gateway is super flexible. Each week you can pick up as many assignments as you feel like you can handle – whether that’s several because you have a lot of free time, or none because you have an exam that week. You can work with our editors to determine what kind of workload works best for you.
  • Do I need to come up with my own ideas for content?
    • You are absolutely welcome to pitch your own ideas if you have them, but there is no pressure to do so. Line editors send out weekly pitch emails full of ideas, so you will always have the option to sign-up and cover specific stories based on your interests and abilities.
  • What if I’m not a writer?
    • There are a ton of opportunities to get involved at The Gateway doing things other than writing articles, whether that be filming videos, recording podcasts, making playlists, taking photos, or creating illustrations and visual content. If you’re not as confident in your writing abilities, The Gateway is also a great place to try something out and get one-on-one feedback and support from our editors!
