Mouth off the Month: September

The first month of fall turned out to be a boon from the summer

Mouth Off the Month is a monthly article in which our Opinion Editor reviews the previous month and decides whether it was good, bad, or somewhere in between. What will she decide this month? Keep reading to find out!

The old Green Day line “wake me up when September ends” has turned out to be inaccurate this year. While September is usually dull and stressful, this year it has actually been pretty good.

Generally, people feel sadder during the winter, whether due to lack of sunlight or inability to go outside, but for me it’s the opposite. During the summer I always find myself stuck in a slog of unhappiness, treading mud instead of water. Sometimes it extends into fall too, but not this year.

September always gives me some relief, as being in class gives me some sense of purpose. Actively working towards my future goals always tends to make me feel good, even if it’s only temporary. I’m sure once I take my first midterm it’ll wear off, but for now, I’m happy to be in school again.

The weather, which was relentlessly rainy and downright dreary all summer, finally let up this September. It rained less often and was nice outside until the very end, when we got a satisfying thin powdering of snow on campus. The orange and yellow leaves are also good for lifting spirits, and so far I have loved all of my classes.

This September has been surprisingly good. I escaped a summer-long funk virtually as soon as the month began, and I could not be more grateful for the busy-making distraction of classes and work. Thank you September, for releasing us from the rain-slick grip of summer, and for allowing us the relief of knowing we’re progressing towards our future.
