The Edmonton Folk Festival opened up with Digging Roots, Hozier, and many more.

On August 8, the 2019 Edmonton Folk Fest kicked off with star-studded performances by Digging Roots, Trampled by Turtles, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, and Hozier. Our photographers caught some snapshots of the headliners — check them out below.

Helen Zhang Juno-winning Digging Roots is made up of First Nations power couple, Shoshona Kish and Raven Kanatakta. Digging Roots opened the first day of the Edmonton Folk Fest.
Nana Andoh Progressive bluegrass band, Trampled by Turtles, followed them with their own unique sound.

Helen Zhang Alabama’s St. Paul & the Broken Bones captivated the audience with their gospel-tinged, retro-soul performance.

Rachel Wang The night closed off with Irish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Hozier. The artist rose to fame with the single, Take Me To Church and earned a Grammy nomination for his self-titled album Hozier.

Ashlynn Chand

Ashlynn was the 2019-20 Arts and Culture Editor. She was a fifth year English and Psychology student. She can be described as a friendly neighbourhood cat: very small, very fast, and can sleep anywhere.

Helen Zhang

Helen Zhang is The Gateway's 2019-2020 Photo Editor. She is a graduate student in Library and Information Studies who spends too much time on Lightroom and Photoshop.
