Top 10: Memes of 2018, Honorable Mention #5: I don’t feel so good

In this top 10, our writer breaks down their favourite memes that came out of 2018. Pray for them and their sanity.

It’s hard to argue that one of the more salient meme sources of 2018 was Avengers: Infinity War. It birthed a whole wazoo of internet jokes, ranging from nonsensical shitposting (THANOS CAR THANOS CAR) to top-tier macros (let me guess: your home?). There could be another whole article on the top ten Infinity War memes.

Unfortunately, I have to pick just one, and I gotta say, “I don’t feel so good” has gotta be my favourite.

You can apply it to nearly everything. Nuked your GPA after a bad midterm? Got rejected by your crush? Your favourite fictional character dies? It’s perfect.

It doesn’t have to make that much sense; people have photoshopped people and characters disintegrating simply for the hell of it, putting an ironic twist on the tragic moment where SPOILERS half of the beloved Avengers are killed by Thanos’ genocidal snap.

This lack of sense, however, demonstrates the limits of this meme. When anything is game to be disintegrated, the joke gets made too often and without careful consideration for what makes the meme funny in the first place. The result is a meme that gets stale incredibly quickly, and that’s unfortunately what happened with “I don’t feel so good.”

Despite that staleness, this meme was amazing when it was at its peak. So let’s remember like it was then; fresh, funny, and powerful.
