Week 10: Sarah

March 17, 2010 - 10:12pm

The key to my successes and failures during this challenge, and during my whole life of trying to be healthy, begin in the fridge. Until this past December, I was living at home and had minimal say in which groceries were purchased each week. I figured once I moved out and was making all of the choices for myself, that everything would be instantly easier.

This photo of the inside of my fridge seems to paint a relatively healthy portrait, but this truth is that almost all of this food belongs to my roommates. I’ve been so insanely swamped for the last few weeks that I haven’t gotten to a grocery store in far too long. I have no fresh fruit or vegetables, no meat, eggs that are two weeks passed their expiry, and a bag of half finished sundried tomato wraps. Most of my meals have consisted mostly of thrown together pseudo-meals, or food purchased on campus, which is the least healthy option.

For me, the most toxic part of this has been having an extremely limited amount of free time to look after myself. I’ve realized this semester that I have far too much on my plate (literally and metaphorically), and until I quit one of my jobs, my chances of becoming a healthier person, physically and mentally, are zero. I’m counting down the days of the semester until I can have some amount of relaxation back and concentrate more on my neglected health.
