Life in the Beauty Lane: Last-Minute Halloween Scheme

Still wondering what costume to rock this Halloween? Never fear, Life in the Beauty Lane is here to demonstrate one last quick look before the scariest day of the year is upon us. This is our take on the porcelain doll look — think less Chucky, more Raggedy Ann.

The costume itself consists of a blue, empire-waisted “baby-doll” dress, white tights, white ballet flats (with bows), and a clear headband with a white ribbon attached. Our model, Haley, has her hair down in loose curls, but curled pigtails are also a popular option.

For the makeup portion of the look, don’t worry about being absolutely precise, especially if you’re not a regular wearer of cosmetics. Halloween should be more about fun, less about finesse.

Step 1: Smooth a silicone or water-based primer all over the face to help your costume look last. Then apply your foundation and concealer, taking care to blend the products into your skin for a natural, flawless look. Nothing screams “made-up” like a face that’s two shades darker than your neck and décolletage.

Step 2:  Apply an eyeshadow primer all over the lid. Take a medium sized eyeshadow brush and sweep a shimmery champagne or cream shade all over the lid. Then use a fluffy crease brush to apply a matte taupe shade in the crease. Feel free to go above and beyond your natural crease to make your eyes appear bigger, wider and more doll-like.

Step 3:  Take a black pencil or liquid liner and trace over your upper lashline. Wing out the line slightly at the end of the eye, and then add a small, connected line above and below your original one. This should make three prongs that help fake long dolly lashes. Using the same eyeliner, draw tiny ticks on your bottom lashline starting from the outer corner travelling inward. Add two or three generous coats of mascara. This will complete your wide-eyed, innocent gaze.

Step 4: Using a bright pink or berry-coloured blush and a large blush or powder brush (we used a chubby kabuki brush here), swirl colour on to the apples of your cheeks. Try to contain the colour within a circular shape that “pops” when you smile. Don’t be afraid to go bright and bold with this step. Your cheeks are half of the signature doll look!

Step 5: Fill in your eyebrows completely with a pencil or gel that matches the colour your hair. You can go one shade darker, but nothing more than that.  To intensify them, add more shape and definition by making the edges crisp and the tails of your brows slightly longer than normal.

Step 6: Dust your face lightly with translucent powder to set the look. A large, fluffy brush works well for this step.

Step 7: Paint up your pout with a bright pink gloss or lip stain that matches your cheeks. Try not to go too dark with whichever shade you choose, lest your makeup look venture from baby-doll to blow-up doll territory.

Finito! Have a happy and safe Halloween!
